March 13, 2012 - Day 9
11:00am

Update from Scott: We just recently received a call from Scott. He is in Unalakleet with Tom Thurston, who he met on the trail last year, and Anna & Kristy. There is a storm in Shaktoolik and the surrounding areas and there is no more room for dogs to rest. Therefore, the race marshall has told everyone in Unalakleet they must stay put until further notice. Scott said wind chills were estimated to be down to -100 degrees in some areas. When they get the green light all 4 will head out for Shaktoolik. Nothing to worry about. He is safely in Unalakleet waiting out the storm.

Dallas Seavey is in the lead with only 52 miles left to Nome with Aliy Zirkle 7 miles behind him. The winner's arrival into Nome will be live on Iditarod Insider and GCI Channal 1.

He called Debbie a few hours ago and the dogs are doing great. He and the team were threatened by a moose last night and the team got tangled up. While Scott was trying to untangle them Brohman mounted Cashmere and... the waiting began. After about 45 minutes of twiddling his fingers watching the northern lights everyone was ready to go again.

March 10, 2012 - Day 6
9:40am

Scott checked into Ruby (the first stop on the Yukon) at 4:00am and has not yet checked out.

All mushers are required to take an 8 hour layover at one of the checkpoints on the Yukon.

March 9, 2012 - Day 6
11:45pm

Scott checked into Cripple (the half way point!) at 6:58am and checked out at 4:11pm with 13 dogs.

Both Varmint and Malkin arrived in Anchorage today. Varmint was dropped in Nikolai because he was fatigued and not pulling & he didn't want to eat in Nikolai. Malkin was dropped in Takotna due to a sore and swollen right leg. Both are doing great tonight.

Scott is currently at race mile 442 traveling 6.4 miles per hour. Ruby is at race mile 467.

March 9, 2012 - Day 5
6:40am

March 8, 2012 - Day 5
9:10pm

Marshal arrived safely back in Anchorage and was given a clean bill of health from the Iditarod Vet. Tomorrow Debbie is taking him to the local Vet for a full exam just to be sure. No word yet on when the other 2 dogs will arrive (Malkin & another dog yet to be determined). Scott called from Takotna and is in great spirits and thanks everyone for their support and well wishes. Scott's rescue of Marshal has hit national news and can now be found on Yahoo! and MSN Sports along with ABC National News. Just ignore all the comments from people who don't know what their talking about :-)

After completing his mandatory 24 hour layover he checked out of Takotna at 4:14pm with 13 dogs. He checked in and out of Ophir at 7:08pm and 7:12pm with 13 dogs.

He is currently at race mile 335 traveling 6.8 miles per hour on his way to Cripple.

TIME DIFFERENTIAL

Since all the mushers leave at different times they have to make up for that during their 24 hour mandatory layover; the last musher to leave Willow is the only musher who actually has a mandatory 24 hours.

Here's a good example: Bib# 2 - Ray Redington, Jr. left Willow at 2:00pm and his brother, Bib# 67 - Ryan Redington left at 4:10pm - 2 hours and 10 minutes after Bib# 2 left. Therefore, Bib# 2 will have to stay in the checkpoint for 26 hours and 10 minutes in order to allow Bib# 2 and the other mushers who started after him to "catch up."

Scott left Willow at 3:10pm so he has to stay for 25 hours and 10 minutes!

March 7, 2011 - Day 4
5:10pm

It's been a big day for The Mushin' Mortician! There was an online article in the Anchorage Daily News "'The Mushin Mortician' gives mouth-to-snout CPR after dog collapses" describing how he saved Marshall's life & brought him safely to Rohn, and he was on the front page of his hometown newspaper The Crookston Times!

Scott checked in and out of McGrath at 11:31am and 11:35am with 14 dogs. He is now in Takotna after checking in at 2:46pm.

He is taking his mandatory 24 hour layover in Takotna which turns into a 25 hour 10 minute layover because of the time differential (described above). He is currently a day ahead of his 2011 race!!!

Just like The Mushin' Mortician, we all get a day to relax!

March 7, 2011 - Day 3
7:10am

Scott checked into Nikolai at 9:19pm and out at 4:41am with 14 dogs. He had to drop Marshall in Rohn after [Marshall] had a near-death experience on the trail. He is doing fine & on his way back home. No word yet on who was dropped in Nikolai.

Scott called Debbie (his wife) last night and explained the ordeal with Marshall and that on his way to Nikolai he hit a tree stump and went flying. Lots of adventures but he is still in high spirits and on his way to McGrath.

He is currently at race mile 234.1 traveling 6.7 miles per hour.

March 6, 2011 - Day 3
9:45pm

Scott left Rohn at 8:52am with 15 dogs - no word yet on which dog he had to drop. He has recently checked into Nikolai but the official time has not been posted.

He is currently at race mile 220.5 (Nikolai).

March 6, 2011 - Day 2
7:00am

He is currently at race mile 152.1 (Rohn).

March 5, 2011 - Day 2
9:25pm

Scott checked into Finger Lake at 8:33am and out at 8:35am with all 16 dogs. Next he had to face the Happy River Steps - which were removed from the race due to the danger they pose to the mushers and dogs but put back into the race just a few days ago. He tackled the steps with an average speed of 8.68 miles per hour and checked into Rainy Pass at 12:37pm in 14th place! After resting and, I'm sure chatting with some champions, he checked out at 6:51pm with all 16 dogs.

He is currently at race mile 136.3 traveling 4.9 miles per hour. The Dalzell Gorge must be conquered before reaching the next checkpoint, Rohn.

March 5, 2012 - Day 1
8:00am

Scott checked into Skwentna at 10:34pm and out at 3:30am with all 16 dogs.

He is currently in 26th place at race mile 91.6 traveling 8.5 miles per hour!

March 4, 2012 - Day 1
9:40pm

Scott took off from Willow at 3:10pm with 16 dogs: Cashmere, Angel, Vermint, Katmai, Brohman, Willow, Marshall, Nadine, Kingston, Frosty, Bear, Weasel, Viking, Zerkle, Thor and Melkin took Crazy's place - nothing to worry about.

He checked in and out of Yentna Station at 7:22pm and 7:24pm with all 16 dogs in 32nd place :-)

Unfortunately Paul Gebhardt (Scott's mushing mentor) scratched from the race at Nikolai. Many of his dogs cramped up on the way to the checkpoint and after assessing all the dogs he would have been left with only 8 dogs and there was just too much trail left for only 8 dogs. He believes warm weather and dehydration caused the cramping.
